How Solar Energy is Lighting up 1000s of Homes in Manipur: Empowering Women and Children

Seth’s Journey to Empowerment:

Seth Moirangthem, founder of SNL Solar Solutions, did his graduation in arts from Manipur University, spending eight years working for non-profit organizations across the state.

While learning, he traveled extensively to remote rural areas and practically witnessed the challenges faced due to frequent power outages.

These problems and experiences made him humble about the struggles of rural communities and pushed him to work for their welfare.

In 2019, Seth founded SNL Energy Solutions after undergoing entrepreneurship training with the Selco Foundation.

The name “SNL” refers to “salt and light,” symbolizing preservation and empowerment. His enterprise addressed the energy scarcity in rural Manipur and provided sustainable solutions to tailor to people’s needs.

One of his primary focus areas has been empowering women weavers who depend on power looms. Seth introduced solar-powered systems with a capacity of 1 kilowatt to seamlessly operate these energy-intensive machines.

This innovation has allowed women to extend their working hours into the night, boosting productivity and improving economic conditions.

Innovative Solutions for Diverse Needs:

Seth’s SNL Energy Solutions is also supporting fishing communities in Manipur’s Lokta Lake by introducing solar-powered floating huts.

Fishermen previously relied on kerosene lamps during long stays in the lake’s unique floating islands, called phumdis. They now have consistent power backup.

Similarly, potters from the Kakaching district have also adopted solar-powered pottery wheels, which allow them to work uninterrupted and earn a stable income despite frequent power outages.

Seth’s innovative solutions empower people from different walks of life; he also ensures ongoing customer support even during technical challenges.

SNL Energy Solutions has also collaborated with local NGOs and microfinance institutions to offer financing options such as EMIs to make solar technology affordable to financially disadvantaged people.

A typical 40-watt solar panel costs around ₹18,000 and powers bulbs in a three-room home for up to six hours after sunset which is a significant a significant benefit in Manipur’s early-setting winters.

Overcoming Challenges:

In the remote rural regions of Manipur, poor road connectivity has posed logistical challenges from the start of SNL Energy solutions.

The COVID-19 pandemic further disrupted their operations due to social distancing. The political unrest in Manipur was also a halt in their services. Despite these setbacks, Seth remains committed to expanding his impact.

Seth is now working with government agencies to provide aid in the recent communicable violence and has expanded operations into neighboring states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.

In just six years, SNL Energy Solutions has illuminated over 1000 homes in Manipur while fostering sustainability for nature.
