Tripura is famous for its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and diverse agricultural products.
Although geographically small, Tripura’s Daspara village has taken a huge initiative in developing India’s first Bio village, which promotes organic farming and sustainable development.
Daspara has set a shining example of eco-friendly and sustainable living by introducing renewable energy resources and organic farming practices in everyday life.
Daspara was applauded internationally when The Climate Group , a London-based NGO, recognized Daspara’s sustainable technologies as one of the ten best practices in the world.
This Bio Village is supported by the Tripura government’s “Bio Village 2.0” initiative, where sustainable development of the village is the primary objective.
A Sustainable Village:
The transformation of Tripura began with Bio Village 2.0 was first introduced in 2018, to promote self-sustenance and organic farming.
Over time, the villagers expanded the initiative to include sustainable and natural solutions for their daily needs of energy.
These efforts included Biogas plants, Solar-powered equipment, improved breeds of livestock, every-saving electrical device, and natural fertilizers.
Daspara village focused on promoting agriculture that is in harmony with climate conditions and provided sustainable solutions that benefit the entire bio-diversity.
75% of villagers are dependent on agriculture and fisheries in Daspara and this change in green practices requires education and awareness.
Utilizing solar-powered tools, organic fertilizers, and biogas plants helped them reduce the environmental stress and started producing nutrient-rich food.
Not just organic farming but Daspara has also reduced its dependence on non-renewable energy resources.
The villagers have adopted Solar panels and biogas plants to get affordable natural energy for their everyday lives.
For instance, biogas provides clean energy for cooking and household energy needs and Solar energy pumps help irrigate the fields, reducing the carbon emissions in Daspara village.
Today, Daspara villagers are enjoying healthier food, fertile soil, clean air, and a natural way of life.
Economic Growth through Organic Farming:
Daspara has significantly benefited from the Bio Village 2.0 initiative and self-sustenance.
The adoption of organic farming has led to increased productivity and greater quality of produce, which in turn has increased farmer returns.
Each of the 64 households in Daspara is earning an additional income of Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 per month.
The Bio Village project has also provided livelihood to the most vulnerable sections of the village, providing respectful income.
Some new skills like mushroom cultivation, beekeeping, and bio-composting have been introduced.
Sustainable living has also diversified family incomes and reduced their dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides that cost extensively more.
International Recognition and Community Efforts:

The Climate Group’s acknowledgment of Daspara’s efforts put India on the global map as a model for sustainable development, climate change mitigation, and rural poverty alleviation.
Inspired by Daspara’s success, the Tripura state government is planning to set up 100 such villages in the future.
The project’s holistic approach that works on every factor of living ensures that these benefits are sustainable in the long run.
Bio-Village also benefitted from a convergence of community development and group efforts in the village.
Daspara’s villagers were encouraged to work together and select projects that would benefit them and the environment the most.
This collaboration promotes community development and the solutions can be tailored to each of the most vulnerable groups.
Bio-Village also provided flexibility in the adoption of sustainable practices where some families choose to install solar water pumps while others opted for biogas units or improved livestock breeds.
This flexibility has been a key to the initiative’s success as it empowered the villagers to make decisions that benefited their families and aligned with sustainability goals.
Tripura’s Bio Village 2.0 is a remarkable example of community development and how rural communities are capable of thriving with sustainable practices and renewable energy.
