In a world where ecosystems are crumbling and nature is threatened, sustainably innovative stories give us hope.

When people use their skills and expertise to bring out natural solutions, it helps others find inspiration to work for our environment.

In the heart of Haryana, an architect in Hisar has found an eco-friendly way to keep his home cool in the extreme heat.

As the summer is approaching, the ACs are going to fire up our electricity bills and Greenhouse gas emissions, further heating our planet.

In Hisar, architect Gokul Goyal created an ingenious way to keep his home cool using 7,000 mitti kulhads or Terracotta cups.

Gokul’s eco-friendly roof design that uses the earthen kulhads, can offer a refreshing solution and help save from climate change.

A Roof of Terracotta Cups:

Terracotta cups have been used for thousands of years in India with our favorite Masala Tea.

But Gokul Goyal has found an innovative use of Kulhads, to make roofs with them while staying connected to his cultural roots.

His two-story terracotta roof design uses Chinese mosaic tiles, white cement, and around 7,000 kulhads to create a roof that stays cool during summer.

Inspired by Indian architecture and a rich culture, he decided to use these terracotta cups which are often discarded after one use.

Instead of relying on traditional white putti or insulation paints, which are harmful to nature, Gokul used Kulhads to form a natural filler in the terrace roof.

The Science Behind Terracotta Roof:

The terracotta roof is a scientific technique of making roofs naturally coolant and insulated from water seepage.

Gokul explains that Kulhads are carefully lined up across the terrace, covering the entire surface. The cement is poured onto them.

The surface is then packed with mosaic tiles while sealing the gaps with white cement and a mix of waterproofing materials, ensuring no water leakage.

After proper drying, the roof keeps the house cool even during the hottest months.

One factor that makes this roof design brilliant is the combination of heat-reflective and naturally cooling materials like terracotta cups.

The glazed mosaic tiles can reflect up to 60% of the sun heat back, while the remaining heat can get absorbed in the air pockets of earthen cups.

This dual layer ensures that the room below stays cool, providing an efficient way and highly effective insulation from heat.

The mosaic tiles add charm to the roof while keeping it energy efficient and saving your A.C. bills.

This flooring also offers a slip-resistant surface with white cement and is also eco-friendly.

This sustainable roof design is also low-maintenance and will ensure durability, making it a long-lasting choice.

The world needs such innovations!
